Sample Devotional Submission
(Hart-Gay, p227, In His Presence, Carolyn Rathbun Sutton, Editor) August 7 Complete Freedom Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. James 4:7, NIV Geckos (small lizards) are plentiful in Florida. They are frequently seen in sunny spots outdoors and are perfectly harmless. It is when they come inside our houses that they get into trouble. Often one of them seeks warmth by climbing partway up the doorframe onto the sunroom. When the door opens, it drops down and frequently ends up inside the sunroom. When a gecko gets inside, I try very hard to catch it and put it back outside again as soon as possible. Yet it will often evade me by running away and hiding under the furniture or behind the window blinds. It moves quickly, evading capture. Try as I might, I often can’t find it to return it to its outdoor home. This is usually the death knell for the poor little creature. Usually, days later I will find a dehydrated skeleton under a piece of furniture or in a corner. If only the gecko had submitted to my rescue efforts, I could have given it the freedom it certainly desired. Often we are like a little gecko that gets inside the house. Our desire for independence, or our stubbornness, leads us to engage in activities that get us into trouble spiritually, financially, socially, or physically. If our minds are bent on freedom through our own efforts, we yield to Satan’s seductions. Despite warnings from our family, friends; our own better judgment; and impressions from the Holy Spirit, we often take a path that leads to undesirable consequences. What a mess we can find ourselves in! Like my intense efforts to provide a path to freedom for the little geckos, there is One who does that for each of us. Our loving heavenly Father seeks to lead and guide us through the Holy Spirit in paths of righteousness. Even when we resist His efforts on our behalf, He doesn’t give up on us. He is a God of second chances. When we are indifferent to His promptings, He tries another way to get our attention. His motive for wanting to save us is His great love for us. He created and redeemed us through the sacrifice of His Son on Calvary. Our best assurance of complete freedom is a personal relationship with Him. This means spending time with Him daily, interacting with Him through Bible study, prayer, and meditation. Doing so melts our resistance to His will, and we delight in following His precepts and commands. Whom do you want to control your life?
